New Student Orientation FAQs

  • I’m a commuter. Do I have to attend Move-In Weekend events?
    • Yes. Move-In Weekend events help all new students acclimate to campus and cover essential new student information. These events are mandatory for all first-time college students.
  • I’m a transfer student. Do I have to attend Move-In Weekend events?
    • We encourage you to attend as much as possible! While some sessions may cover information you’re already familiar with, Move-In Weekend is also an opportunity to connect with other new-to-Pitt-Bradford students and learn about campus resources. Please review the schedule and attend any sessions that are relevant to you.
  • I can’t move in until Saturday. What do I do?
    • Connect with the Residence Life & Housing office to make sure you arrive during an available move-in window. You may miss portions of mandatory new student orientation and will receive information about accessing anything you missed.
  • I have work, a family emergency, or another conflict. What do I do?
    • Please attend as much as possible. We understand that unexpected circumstances happen, and reasonable absences may be excused. Contact us at pborient@pitt.edu if you have a conflict.
  • I’m an athlete. Do I have to attend?
    • Yes. If you have a schedule conflict, please contact the orientation staff to discuss your schedule and expectations.
  • Is the whole schedule mandatory?
    • Everything listed in red on the schedule is mandatory.
  • Can my family/supporters attend the events?
    • Some events are designed for students only, while others are open to supporters. Check the schedule for details about who should attend each event.
  • What if I miss a mandatory event?
    • If you miss a mandatory event because of an approved conflict or emergency, contact us at pborient@pitt.edu for information about anything you need to complete or review.
  • Do I need to bring anything to orientation sessions?
    • Bring your Pitt ID, your phone, and something to take notes with if you'd like. You may also want a water bottle and a small bag for materials.
  • What if I have a question during Move-In Weekend?
    • Ask a member of the orientation team! You’ll see staff and student leaders throughout the weekend who can help with questions, directions, schedules, and anything else you need.
