New Student Orientation FAQs
What is the difference between Summer Orientation and New Student Orientation?
Summer Orientation is:
- One full day in mid-summer (July & August dates are available)
- Strongly encouraged, and includes a registration process
- Focuses on summer preparation reminders and includes some information tailored to parents
Fall Orientation is:
- August 20 through August 23
- Mandatory for all new students (not including transfers)
- More in-depth policy expectations and resource information, including wellness & safety
- Can I change my Summer Orientation date?
We will do our best to accommodate any registration changes. Reach out to our orientation team at pborient@pitt.edu for assistance.
- What if I need accommodations (dietary restrictions, mobility issues, etc) for Summer Orientation?
We’ve done our best to ensure that orientation is accessible for all our guests. If you have specific concerns (ie in need of a wheelchair for the day), please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know, and we will support you in any way that we can.
- Summer Orientation starts early - will breakfast be provided?
Yes - We will have coffee, water, and light breakfast available during check-in!
- How many parents and supporters am I allowed to bring to Summer Orientation? Will it cost more?
All orientation meals and activities are covered by your one-time orientation fee. You are welcome to bring more, but we recommend bringing 1-2 adult supporters with you who can help you navigate key info about finances and more.
- What if I don’t have any parents and supporters to bring with me to Summer Orientation – will I miss important information?
We still have plenty of information for you! Only one of the orientation sessions is exclusively for parents and supporters, and is focused on ways in which they can help their student.
- What if I can’t attend any of the Summer Orientation dates?
We understand that traveling and/or schedules can make orientation attendance difficult. If you are unable to attend, but are running into questions before you start this fall, reach out to our office and we can help or connect you to someone who can help.
- When will I have time to move in during New Student Orientation in August?
Our Residence Life & Housing Office will provide additional move-in details, usually via email in early August. You will have most of the day Thursday to decorate your room and meet your roommate before activities begin in the afternoon/evening.
- Do I have to attend all New Student Orientation activities?
Yes. We will be taking attendance at all events. New Student Orientation activities are mandatory because we want you to have a strong start, make connections, and feel prepared for your first day of classes.
We look forward to welcoming you to campus and officially introducing you to your new home. You're going to love it here!
Should you have any questions or require special accommodations, please don't hesitate to contact our Orientation team at pborient@pitt.edu.
