The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Staff Association has awarded Bernie Picklo, academic coaching and tutoring center coordinator, its Staff Recognition Award during its September meeting.

Picklo came to Pitt-Bradford in 2008 as the university’s academic technology integrator, later moving into his current role. Before joining the university, Picklo taught high school earth science, and he has continued to teach astronomy at Pitt-Bradford.

He was nominated for the award by Craig Engstrom, administrative assistant for TRIO Student Support Services.

Engstrom said, “The number of students he works with daily, as an academic coach and a tutor, is a testament to his work. More students seek him out each semester. He welcomes students and encourages them to seek help, which allows them to grow and succeed.

“His impact is both seen and unseen through his love of helping others, and he keeps his message interesting and current. His creative approach holds his audience’s attention, which is a model for all of us.”

Engstrom noted that Picklo loves to share his knowledge with others, from helping coworkers with technology conundrums to presenting information to public groups in advance of the April 2024 total solar eclipse.

“Bernie comes to work with a positive attitude,” Engstrom said. “He does his work with a passion for helping others, whether students, strangers, or fellow staff members. He presents great ideas to help us meet our mission at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.”

Picklo holds a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Recent recipients of the staff recognition award include Denise Perkins, recently retired administrative assistant in the Office of Residential Life and Housing; Angie Wolfe, associate dean for experiential learning and leadership; and Bill Kline, retired director of computing, telecommunications and media services.
