Short Bio

Dr. Luz Amaya is an Associate Professor and the incoming Director of Engineering in the Division of Physical and Computational Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, where she will help lead the growth of the engineering programs and guide the accreditation process.

Originally from Colombia, Dr. Amaya's passion for engineering was inspired by her father, and she has built her career carrying forward his legacy through her teaching, research, and mentorship of the next generation of engineers.

Prior to joining Pitt-Bradford, Dr. Amaya spent 14 years at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), where she joined the Department of Engineering as an Assistant Professor in August 2012. She received tenure in 2017 and was promoted to Associate Professor in August 2018. Before CCSU, she was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at New York City College of Technology.
 

Academic Focus

Dr. Amaya's academic focus centers on thermo-fluid sciences and engineering design. She teaches across the curriculum, from introductory courses that build students' foundational understanding of engineering design principles, to senior design courses where students apply thermo-fluid concepts to solve complex, real-world engineering problems. This range allows her to guide students from their first exposure to engineering design through to the culmination of their studies, fostering both technical depth and practical, hands-on problem-solving skills.
