Gender Inclusive Housing

Pitt-Bradford values every member of our campus community and strives to fully include all students who choose to live in on-campus housing.

Gender Inclusive Housing provides students the opportunity to live with students of their choosing, regardless of sex, gender, gender identity or expression.

Availability

Available in select buildings for upper-class students, Gender Inclusive Housing options are in accordance with University housing processes. Spaces are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Residential Life and Housing reserves the right to review all requests, and will determine approval on a case by case basis.

First-year students will be assigned to housing based on documented biological sex. Transgender and transitioning students may contact the Director of Residential Life and Housing to discuss their housing options and must receive approval to live in Gender Inclusive Housing.

Gender Inclusive Housing Assignment Process

Students who wish to live in Gender Inclusive Housing will select rooms using the same housing selection process as all other students. No preference will be given to students who choose Gender Inclusive Housing.

Students must meet the housing application deadline to participate in online room selection. Availability of Gender Inclusive Housing space after online room selection will depend on availability of rooms once the online process has concluded. Students who apply after the online room selection deadline will be assigned to same-sex units based on the student’s biological gender, as identified on the student's University record.

Limitations/Restrictions

If a student requests a roommate that is not the same biological sex, the requested roommate must confirm their desire to live together as roommates in Gender Inclusive Housing.

Students choosing to live in Gender Inclusive Housing must be able to fill the apartment/suite of their choice with suitemates/apartment-mates who have agreed to live in a gender-inclusive space.

While no formal restriction applies, the Office of Residential Life and Housing does not recommend that romantic couples, regardless of orientation, live together in Gender Inclusive Housing.

Filling Vacancies in Gender Inclusive Housing

In the event that one of the students in a Gender Inclusive Housing assignment cancels their housing contract, or moves out of the room for any reason, the remaining student(s) may identify a new roommate to fill this vacancy. The amount of time available to identify a new roommate will depend upon the current housing situation and status of the housing process.

If the remaining roommate(s) cannot identify a new roommate, Residential Life and Housing will assign a new roommate to the room and the room will revert to a single-sex room. A new roommate will be assigned based upon the documented biological gender of the remaining roommate(s).
