Short Bio

Dr. Burns has spent 30 years in the sport industry – coaching intercollegiate softball and volleyball teams, interscholastic and community/youth club volleyball teams, summer camps and clinics. Dr. Burns has served a variety of roles in higher education. She worked at Clarion University as the Interim-Director of the Advising Center, Outreach Coordinator for the TRIO Educational Talent Search program, and instructed sport management and first-year seminar courses. She joined the Pitt-Bradford team as our Retention Specialist for the TRIO Student Support Services program and then moved into the Academic Advising Center where she served as Academic Advisor/Academic Coach until taking on her latest role as Program Director and Assistant Professor of Sport and Recreation Management.

Burns spends her free time chasing her grandchildren while supporting her own children’s passion for the sport of volleyball – as they are active players and coaches.

Academic Focus

Dr. Burns teaches courses in Sport and Recreation Management, as well as courses for the minors in Sport Management, Athletic Coaching, and Recreation Administration.

Research, Accomplishments, and Publications

Dr. Burns has published articles in The Sport Journal and The Sports Digest. She has presented at regional and national conferences sharing expertise in overcoming procrastination, best practices for retention of undeclared students, and developing a college life coaching program. Dr. Burns’ current research interests include positive psychology, leadership, team building, and the significant role of team captains in sport.
