WHO WE ARE:

The Writing Center at the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford supports writing across the curriculum for all writers, including students, faculty, and staff. The Writing Center offers free, individualized services to assist writers in their development—no matter what their skill level may be. We believe in the power of writing to aid students' learning as well as to improve their critical thinking skills, helping them to organize, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and reflect in all disciplines and beyond. Our highly competent faculty consultants (and peer tutors--coming soon!) provide support for writers of all levels and abilities to develop their writing skills in on-campus or online one-on-one consultations.

WHAT WE DO:

We support writers in a variety of projects: essays for any course, capstone projects from conception to final draft, resumes, cover letters, and personal essays for job and graduate school applications. We work with students to develop strategies for improving their writing, add skills to their writer’s toolbox, and become more confident in their own writing abilities.  We encourage students to take ownership of their writing by promoting attitudes and activities essential to writing well.  Lastly, we work to support faculty throughout the disciplines, e.g. through workshops and in-class presentations, to promote writing and excellent writing skills across the curriculum.

WHAT WE AREN'T:

We are not a proofreading or editing service.  Instead, we help writers learn to better analyze and evaluate their own writing and assess whether they are meeting the requirements of their assignment and reaching their audience.  We don't "fix" papers; instead, we consult with students to help them revise and edit for higher and lower order concerns.  Common areas of focus might include brainstorming, drafting, and revision; thesis, organization, and word choice; identifying pattern errors in grammar and punctuation and improving editing and proofreading skills; evaluating sources and managing in-text citations and citation styles; and achieving greater stylistic sophistication and elegance.

Our Writing Consultants:

Nier-Weber, Dani  Dani Weber earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from Smith College, her M.A. in English from Butler University, and her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Ball State University.  Dani served last year as Visiting Writing Center Director at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, OR, where she also taught a variety of writing classes on campus and online such as composition, methods of tutoring writing, argumentation, and technical writing.  She lived in Germany for over a decade, teaching English as a foreign language, and for many years was also an active member of various fiction writing critique groups.  Students seeking writing consultations in any area will benefit from a session with Dani, particularly seniors who are seeking support for their capstone projects.
