Om teaches courses on Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genomics-Proteomics-Bioinformatics, and Microbial Biochemistry, as well as Capstone and Senior Seminar. He also teaches the Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology course and Human Biology courses for non-majors. He supervises a research team of students on multiple research projects. Under his direction the student research team has isolated and developed multiple extremophiles including Ultra-violet and Electromagnetic radiation-resistant, Aerotolerant, Thermophiles, Psychrophiles, and Antibiotic resistant extremophiles from rare earth habitats and food products. His research team screens for potential value added products of therapeutic, bioenergy, and commercial significance from a variety of extremophiles.
Before coming to Pitt-Bradford, Om was a visiting assistant professor and visiting scientist at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he also served as a postdoctoral research associatefor five years. He is currently editor-in-chief for the "Journal of Radioprotection Research" and "Biological Research and Reviews." In 2013, he edited a book, "Microbial Bio-Nanotechnology: Resources of Green Biotechnology," which will be published in December 2014. He is a member of numerous editorial boards and professional organizations.
Research, Accomplishments, and Publications:
Om has published dozens of scholarly articles
, including many co-authored by students, and is the author of "Extremophiles: Sustainable Resources and Biotechnological Implications" and "Sustainable Biotechnology: Sources of Renewable Energy."
