Freshman Partnerships for Developmental Courses

Developmental  English Composition Partnership

The Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center and the Coordinator of the Composition Program work together in assisting  freshman students who require developmental assistance in composition. An early alert intervention system allows Comp 1 instructors to quickly identify students strengths and weaknesses in writing within the first few weeks of the  semester. A formalized referral system allows consistent communication between the instructors, referred students, and specially trained Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center tutors.

Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center Comp 1 tutors have been trained in the Comp 1 syllabus contents, marking rubric, and instructors expectations, and are available to meet weekly with students (self or faculty referred).  This program works to ensure that students are able to be competitive in post secondary academic writing expectations from the foundation course of Comp 1 onward.

Developmental Math (Algebra 1) Formal Review Clinic

The Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center and the Coordinator of developmental mathematics work together in assisting freshman students who require developmental assistance in Algebra 1. An early alert intervention system allows the Algebra 1 instructors to refer students who show weak test scores within the first few weeks of the semester to a biweekly Formal Review Clinic. The Clinic is facilitated by an Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center senior math tutor familiar with the Algebra 1 syllabus and the regular test assignments. Feedback on attendance and review topics covered is forwarded to the instructors immediately for continued adjustment in teaching content and strategy.
