We flew into the beautiful colonial city of Merida, in the western Yucatan, which was our base for the week. We explored the famous ruins of Chichen Itza, saw the 10,000 year old painted hands of Loltun Cave, visited the Arch of Kabah, the labyrinth of Oxkintok, and spend two nights at extraordinary Uxmal. We swam in the cenote of Dzibilchaltun and took measurements at the observatory of Mayapan. The monastery and church at Mani, site of a famous Spanish auto-de-fe, was also part of our trip, as were visits to modern Maya homes, where we learned to make sisal rope, and see a pottery workshop.
