It’s a life enrichment experience. This course will introduce students to different cultures through research, interactive guest lectures, engaging student presentations and self examinations.  Students will be given the opportunity to share their own experiences of studying abroad or their hopes to study abroad. Networking Styles and Practices:  Connecting With Your Future

Instructor: Lindsay Hilton Retchless
Networking -- a popular expression, but what does it really mean? You are networking when you do something as simple as calling a friend to ask how their day went. Other forms of networking are considerably more challenging and complex.  Networking is a critical part of everyday life and its benefits are limitless.  This course teaches powerful networking skills and examines a variety of communication styles.  Students develop their own lasting network by making connections with Pitt-Bradford alumni, staff, faculty, community members and peers.  While building your network, you learn about others and their success; how they got to where they are and how they intend to get where they are going; what has worked and what hasn't; what career opportunities are open to you and which you ultimately find the most interesting to pursue.

Speaking About Thinking

Instructor:  David Merwine
College students spend years learning, memorizing and analyzing, yet few freshman know anything about the organ used for these activities – their brains.  In ‘Speaking about Thinking’ we will broadly examine the brain: how it works and can be made to work better, how it senses and can be fooled, how its function differs across people, societies, ages and sexes.  We will combine lectures with group discussions centered on books and movies about the brain such as ‘The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat’, ‘Charly’, ‘Rain Man’ and ‘Regarding Henry.’  We will also discuss the future of brain science, including ‘smart pills’ and neuroengineering.
