The Writing Center supports writing across the curriculum for all writers, including students, faculty, and staff. The Writing Center offers free, individualized services to assist writers in their development—no matter what their skill level may be. We believe in the power of writing to aid students' learning as well as to improve their critical thinking skills, helping them to organize, analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and reflect in all disciplines and beyond. Our highly competent faculty (and peer) consultants provide support for writers of all levels and abilities to develop their writing skills in on-campus, one-on-one consultations, or online by request.
We are not a proofreading or editing service. Instead, we help writers learn to better analyze and evaluate their own writing through dialogue, open-ended questions, and conversation. We help students assess whether they are meeting the requirements of their assignment and reaching their audience. We don't "fix" papers; instead, we consult with students to help them revise and edit for higher and lower order concerns. Common areas of focus might include brainstorming, drafting, and revision; thesis, organization, and word choice; identifying pattern errors in grammar and punctuation and improving editing and proofreading skills; evaluating sources and managing in-text citations and citation styles; and achieving greater stylistic sophistication and elegance.
We support writers in a variety of projects: essays for any course, capstone projects from conception to final draft, resumes, cover letters, and personal essays for job and graduate school applications. We work with students to develop strategies for improving their writing, add skills to their writer’s toolbox, and become more confident in their own writing abilities. We encourage students to take ownership of their writing by promoting attitudes and activities essential to writing well. Lastly, we work to support faculty throughout the disciplines, e.g. through workshops and in-class presentations, to promote writing and excellent writing skills across the curriculum.
