Why Freshman Seminar?
College is a whole different world, full of great experiences and opportunities. Freshman Seminar helps prepare you for what lies ahead. The course reaches far beyond lectures into interactions and activities that allow students to be involved in their education. In fact, as a "seminar", it is expected and encouraged. Freshman Seminar is specifically designed with the student in mind and is meant to help students adjust socially, as well as academically. Freshman Seminar is your gateway "beyond" the classroom - it is your gateway to the entire university!
Goals
Learn how to Think, Reason and Analyze
Freshman Seminar encourages students to be creative, self-expressive, and to develop independent thinking skills. The program encourages students to use their minds by discussing ideas, research, fieldwork, library investigations, etc.
Meet Fellow Students:
The Freshman Seminar program is created around the idea of helping students to adjust to their surroundings. The program involves individual and group projects and presentations that allow students to work together and meet new people. The programs also use outside activities such as attending plays, concerts, or films followed by discussions along with purely social events, such as class dinners.
Engage with Faculty and Staff:
Freshman Seminar courses are more than just lectures. Every program has a different approach, but each one involves personal mentoring that allows for students to have close personal contact with a faculty member.

Understand The Value of General Education:
The concept of general education is to prepare students with a foundation of knowledge, skills and cultural understanding. Freshman Seminar History
The freshman seminar concept started at Pitt-Bradford in the early 90’s with voluntary programs. The faculty and staff wanted a way to assist new students with the transitions into a college lifestyle. Students who participated in these programs were more likely to have a successful college career. Over the years, new topics and ideas were introduced and student interest grew. Today, Freshman Seminar is required and a key component in the transition and navigation of college life.
