The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, is closely monitoring developments regarding H1N1 (swine flu).
The university has not received word yet on when its supply of H1N1 vaccine will be available.
Faculty, staff and students, along with their family members are encouraged to consider receiving the seasonable flu vaccination when it becomes available later this fall.
In the meantime, there are measures you can take in an effort to stay healthy:
- Have a basic medical kit in your room that includes a thermometer, Band Aids, antibiotic cream, ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and hand sanitizer.
- Have your insurance card handy.
- Follow common sense guidelines to prevent getting or spreading the visur or other illnesses.
- Keep in mind that anti-viral medications such as Tamiflu are only necessary if you have a chronic medical condition such as asthma or diabetes, are immuno-compromised or are pregnant.
- If your roommate has been diagnosed with H1N1 and you have a chronic illness, are immunosuppressed or are pregnant, please contact the Office of Student Health Services at 362-5272 to schedule an appointment.
- Sleep eight hours a day, eat your fruits and vegetables, and maintain good personal hygiene. The better we treat our bodies, the better we will be able to avoid illness and perform to the best of our abilities.
The university will also maintain contact with local, state, and federal health authorities as this situation evolves, and will provide information here as it becomes available.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has the most up-to-date information on the virus.
