The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has a secondary insurance policy, which is designed to cover injuries occurring during traditional athletic participation. If a student-athlete is covered by another health care plan, this is considered her/his primary insurance.
Any injury, which occurs as a result of participation in intercollegiate athletics (traditional season only) for the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will be fully covered. The bills for any injury must be submitted to the student-athlete’s primary insurance company first (your own, or your parents, insurance). The University’s secondary insurance carrier will pay for the remaining portion of the bill. NOTE: The University will not be responsible for payment of treatment, which occurs 12 months after the date of injury.
Any injury that is NOT referred by the sports medicine staff WILL NOT be covered by the University’s insurance. A student-athlete must be referred by a member of the University’s sports medicine staff.
All student-athletes must complete an insurance form prior to participation in any practices or intercollegiate contests.
IMPORTANT: If you are a member of an HMO, please contact your benefits provider to inquire about proper procedures regarding your Primary Care Physician (PCP) in the case of sports injuries. If you insurance carrier rejects a claim due to improper procedures (i.e. failure to notify PCP regarding emergency treatment, not obtaining a referral, etc) the University will not cover any expenses. Also, if there is a pre-existing condition in which the trainer had no knowledge of due to failure to accurately completing the health form, again the University will not cover any expenses.
