The IA Major Program consists of a total of 45 credits. There are 9 general program credits, including a 3 credits "Arts Awareness"; a 3 credits "Visual Communications"; and a 3 credits "Capstone" courses, taken by all IA Major students, 18 credits in each of two major areas of study (total 36 credits) within four disciplines, art, music, theater, and writing.
Arts education, training, and practical experience will be gained in the following areas: studies in creative and conceptual arts, computer graphics and music technology, creative writing, community arts, performing arts, and interdisciplinary arts.

This capstone project is the culminating event of the IA Major Program. It is an interdisciplinary arts event conceived, created, and produced by the IA major graduate. It may take the form of an art exhibition, musical performance, multi-media artwork, theatrical performance, or lecture with a demonstration. However, the major criteria of the Capstone project must encompass some aspect of artistic presentation or performance by the IA degree candidate. Also, the proposed project must be approved by the program committee in order to be scheduled and marked for public exhibition, performance or lecture.
Internships offer students an opportunity to work in a professional setting such as an art gallery or theater. Through internships students can gain practical work experience, learn about the activities of particular kinds of business, and develop skills and knowledge that will help them in pursuing employment after graduation.

Applied Music courses provide students with the opportunity to earn college credit for their private lessons. These lessons are private. Lessons are arranged between students and instructors. Also, students have access to UPB’s excellent practice studios throughout the semester.
